At the heart of Shining Legacy lies Naïssam Jalal’s desire to create imagined, antifascist healing rituals inspired by Afro-diasporic trance traditions. At a time when increasingly rigid and violent identity politics are taking hold, it is more urgent than ever to reclaim the realm of imagination through desire, beauty, and joy: the desire for one another, the beauty of our interconnectedness, and the joy of being together.
The Afro-diaspora offers one of the broadest and most diverse lenses through which to understand the extraordinary richness born from the interplay between biological identity and cultural identity. To those who believe in the desirability of biological purity, the Afro-diaspora stands as a powerful reminder that multiple cultural identities are a source of immense creativity, resilience, and renewal.
The antifascist rituals of Shining Legacy celebrate the radiant legacy of the Afro-diaspora and the unpredictable creolization of our world.
